About our Lake Erie location
Located in Portland, New York, the Cornell Lake Erie Research Extension Laboratory (CLEREL) supports the grape industries of western New York and Pennsylvania through precision viticulture, vineyard mechanization, and optimized nutrient management. Researchers in this region from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) have had a rich history of sustaining viticulture advancement of vineyard management and production systems, grape breeding, pest control and mechanical harvesting, among others. Today, researchers at CLEREL work together to increase yield, quality and lower production costs for growers in this important viticultural area of New York state.
Our facilities
CLEREL is an agricultural field station and extension center built to serve the Land-Grant mission of Cornell University. The 50-acre research farm currently grows 11 grape varieties, including juice and wine grapes, hops, willow and vegetables. The facility, research farm and field staff are supported by Cornell AgriTech and the location also houses the Cornell Lake Erie Regional Grape Program, which consists of extension educators and research faculty/staff from CALS and Penn State University.
