Meat Goats

Meat goat projects allow youth ages 5 to 19 years of age to raise and work with goats.

Meat goats can be short or long term projects and fall into two categories:

  • the meat goat breeding doe project
  • the meat goat market kid project

Short term meat goat projects require appropriate facilities for the goat to live in for a season, usually in the summer. Longer term projects require facilities appropriate for the goats to live in the entire year. Think about taking care of your goat in the winter and snow before committing to a long term meat goat project!

Youth should discuss with their parents and 4-H educators if the meat goat project is right for them.
