CIFS-IPP Member Spotlight

Each month, we recognize a member of CIFS-IPP, the Institute’s flagship corporate affiliate program.

This month, we’re proud to feature Wegmans Food Markets, a privately held American supermarket chain.
Wegmans Food Markets
The Wegmans story began in 1916, when brothers John and Walter Wegman became fresh produce pushcart peddlers; they opened their first store in 1917 in Rochester, New York. In 1930, the two brothers made national headlines when they opened a 20,000 square foot store—gigantic by standards of the day—with innovations like vaporized water spray to keep produce crisp and a cafeteria that seated 300. Wegmans has since grown into a well-established supermarket chain with over 110 stores throughout the East Coast and more than 53,000 employees, making it one of the largest privately held companies in the US. The company is recognized for offering a wide selection of quality food and a focus on customer service.

Wegmans aims to help people live healthier lives by providing fresh ingredients, prepared meals from in-store chefs, and a variety of grocery options. The company’s philosophy centers around delivering choice, quality, and value to its customers, creating a shopping experience that emphasizes helpfulness and convenience. By prioritizing the needs of both its customers and employees, Wegmans continues to adapt and grow in a competitive supermarket industry, maintaining a commitment to continuous improvement.
