Sanjeeb Baral

Sanjeeb Baral, a 2016-17 Humphrey fellow from Nepal, focused on broadening his intellectual spectrum in the areas of natural resources, environment, and climate change during his time at Cornell University. In 2023, he played a pivotal role at the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. As a moderator for two side events at the Nepal Pavilion, he tackled crucial topics including climate change, water-based disasters, and water governance in Nepal. Additionally, he participated as an expert panellist in sessions such as "Forward Faster...the Road to 2030!" and "Climate Resilient, Inclusive Water Supply and Sanitation in South Asia: Issues and Challenges." This underscores his commitment to driving positive change on a pertinent issue faced by South Asia, one of the most vulnerable regions to climate impact.

Utilizing the professional development grant of the Humphrey program, Sanjeeb was able to cultivate valuable connections made with delegates, experts, and professionals. During the side events, he discussed the primary causes and impacts of water-induced disasters in Nepal, adaptation measures, and the country's readiness to utilize loss and damage funds for climate change mitigation. They also considered policy innovations for water governance in Nepal, highlighting the need to revisit legal frameworks and propose reforms to address climate change considerations. Sanjeeb’s involvement showcases his dedication to advancing climate resilience and sustainable water governance in Nepal on a global stage. To further this objective, he has recently joined the Department of Water Resources and Irrigation in Nepal as its Director General in April and is poised for success in his new role.
