Carlos Morais

The Big Bets Climate Fellowship, established as part of The Rockefeller Foundation’s billion-dollar climate strategy, offers fellows access to programs, networking opportunities, and professional development to effectively implement their ambitious climate solutions on a large scale. Carlos Morais, a Humphrey fellow from Brazil during 2022-23, is one of the 16 leaders selected from Latin America and the US to advance promising solutions that can reverse the adverse impacts of climate change in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). He is currently working as a coordinator at the Agroecological Development Center in Brazil, an NGO addressing rural poverty and inequality in semi-arid regions.

His Big Bet is to “Ensure water rights for equitable adaptation as land gets drier.” And to realize this, he is undertaking a regional initiative involving 16 institutions from 10 Latin American countries. Carlos aims to develop collective strategies to ensure access to essential resources like land and water for disenfranchised communities in semi-arid territories. This effort supports the creation of public policies to enhance food security for vulnerable groups and the development of technologies promoting adaptable agriculture. This work is crucial due to the anticipated climate migration crisis driven by increasingly frequent droughts in the region.
