Sustainable and Resilient Systems

The Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering conducts cutting-edge research in the evaluation, planning, and operation of integrated water, energy, food, and environmental systems. Efforts address the integration and analysis of engineering and policy issues posed by the need to sustainably manage water, land, air, energy, and human resources.

Our analyses combine approaches from a variety of disciplines including systems engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering and process design, data analytics, risk analysis, optimization, Indigenous knowledge systems, ecosystem service assessment, and economics.

We strive to understand and improve how design and management decisions impact the many stakeholders associated with human-environmental systems.
