Climate change is affecting New York State now and is expected to continue to impact every region of the state in the future. Hudson Valley communities face a wide range of impacts - such as severe storms, sea level rise, extreme heat, and short-term drought.

For more information:

  • The New York State Climate Impacts Assessment provides an analysis of current and projected impacts to the state.
  • To learn more about regional impacts in the Hudson Valley, explore the Assessment’s Climate Impact Spotlights for the three regions in the Hudson River Estuary: North Hudson region (Albany, Columbia, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, and Washington counties), Catskills Region (Greene, Ulster, Delaware, and Sullivan counties), and the South Hudson region (Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties).

Adapting to change

In partnership with NYS Water Resources Institute, the NYSDEC Hudson River Estuary Program's Climate Resilience program helps communities to carry out climate adaptation and resilience projects. Climate adaptation involves taking actions to reduce the level of climate change impacts to communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems. The Climate Resilience program emphasizes conservation of natural systems, nature-based solutions, and equitable approaches to adaptation planning.

The Climate Resilience program collaborates with a variety partners to provide support to communities. Our partnerships increase our ability to provide inspiration, technical assistance, peer-to-peer learning opportunities, and funding to communities.

Key partners include:

NYS Climate Smart Communities Program

Climate Smart Communities is a certification program that aids communities in taking action to lower greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to a changing climate. The Climate Resilience program works closely with the CSC program on it’s Climate Adaptation actions (Pledge Element 7).

Hudson River Foundation

The Hudson River Foundation partners with the Climate Resilience program to support adaptation planning for communities in the lower Hudson Valley and New York City region.

Hudson Valley Flood Resilience Network

The Hudson Valley Flood Resilience Network (FRN) - connects local governments taking actionable steps to manage current and future flood risks. The Climate Resilience program is a founding member, supporter and collaborator with the FRN.

Hudson Valley Regional Council

The Hudson Valley Regional Council (HVRC) provides guidance to communities through their Climate Action Planning Institute (CAPI). HVRC has worked with the Climate Resilience program to provide the opportunity for participating communities to produce climate adaptation and resilience plans as a chapter in their Climate Action Plans.

Climate Resilience Partnership

The Climate Resilience Partnership is a group of Cornell Cooperative Extension associations in the Hudson Valley that works closely with the Climate Resilience program to provide community assistance with Climate Smart Communities certification and climate adaptation planning.

Climate-adaptive Design Studio

The Climate-adaptive Design (CaD) Studio is an academic course that links Cornell University landscape architecture students with Hudson River Estuary municipalities to explore design strategies for more climate-resilient communities. The CaD Studio works closely with the Climate Resilience program to connect and engage with communities.
