Engaging in food security, food sovereignty & food justice

The Minor in Community Food Systems (CFS) integrates interdisciplinary course work with community-based learning and research opportunities, allowing students to contribute to more sustainable and equitable food systems.

As Community Food Systems minors, students engage with community-based organizations to gain rich, hands-on experiences in the food system. Storytelling is a foundational skill learned throughout the minor as a mechanism to spread awareness, introduce new perspectives, and increase empathy. Students spend one semester reflecting upon their practicum experiences with Professor Scott Peters to identify key memories, analyze important lessons, and craft narrative stories. This series of narratives reflect students’  practicum experiences alongside their relationship to the food system.

Coronavirus disclaimer:

The CFS 2021 cohort participated in their practicum experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given that these experiences are typically extremely applied, this cohort was heavily impacted by the presence of the pandemic. Consequently, in order to paint a complete picture of the role that the food system plays in their lives, many of the following students chose to also recall experiences with the food system outside of their practicum.

Our Stories

In this series, the CFS 2021 cohort shares valuable lessons and memories they have formed from engaging with the food system. As you read their stories, they encourage you to reflect on your own experiences with the food system, whether positive, challenging, or somewhere in between.
