Why is CALS a great fit for you? Why are you a great fit for CALS?
CALS is a great fit for me because it is such a broad community. I often say I chose Cornell because it has big-school resources with a good community feel, and CALS is a big part of that. I not only love the curriculum of my major, but am fortunate to be surrounded by people who share my passions or are equally passionate about their own areas of study. CALS is a great fit because it is not a monolith of majors, but a celebration of all the life sciences and a triumph of interdisciplinary thinking and discussion. At the end of the day, I also think CALS is such a great fit because it’s not all Cornell has to offer. I do take classes outside of CALS, and I think those courses enrich my overall learning experience and add to my studies within CALS.
What has been an academic highlight for you within your major?
I have been lucky enough to be a teaching assistant for one of my favorite classes, Domestic Animal Biology. This course is one of the first Animal Science classes that students take at Cornell. It has been incredibly fun to run lab stations and hold weekend review sessions. I also think it has been a great opportunity to review the material I previously learned and continue studying it, as Domestic is a class that covers a vast amount of information. Being a TA has also allowed me to connect with my fellow Tas and the professor and really understand and appreciate the amount of work that goes into ensuring everyone is learning and succeeding.
What is something you have been involved with outside of academics that is meaningful to you?
Outside of academics, I am involved with the Hockey Beat for The Cornell Daily Sun. I have always loved hockey, and The Sun has allowed me to stay connected with the sport. I have gotten to travel to Madison Square Garden to cover games and interview numerous coaches and players. It’s an opportunity that I do not think would be available to me at another school, and it goes to show that the “Any Person, Any Study” motto applies throughout all facets of life at Cornell.
What is one of your favorite spots on campus?
It is very hard to pick one favorite spot on campus, but I love Mann Library; it is my go-to study spot. Additionally, Frank Morrison Hall, the Animal Science building, will always feel like home. The people are so welcoming, and it is always nice to see the animals that hang out in the offices of various faculty members. The lab rooms also have a lot of specimens that are really helpful for studying, as well as chalkboards and whiteboards to draw out diagrams.
