PRO-DAIRY farm business management specialist Jason Karszes, Stanley, NY, was presented the Friend of NEDPA Award at the 2024 Northeast Dairy Management Conference on March 6. The Friend of NEDPA Award recognizes an extraordinary industry partner whose work has positively impacted New York’s dairy industry.

“Jason has worked directly with dairy producers for decades. He assists with business management strategies, conducts analysis and research, and coordinates invaluable discussion groups that bring producers together from across the state and the nation to improve their businesses,” said Jon Gilbert, a Union Springs dairyman who serves on the Northeast Dairy Producers Association (NEDPA) Board of Directors. “Like so many at PRO-DAIRY, he has a valuable and unique role. He works with students, academia, industry leaders, and producers. However, Jason sees producers in a different light and more personal level - he sees the finances.”

Karszes worked with Extension in Western, NY since 1991 and joined PRO-DAIRY in 1998. He is known for his thought-provoking questions, for his contributions to conference development with insights into other industries, and for his dedication to dairy farming.

“I am delighted that Jason is receiving this well-deserved recognition from NEDPA,” said PRO-DAIRY Director Tom Overton. “Jason works tirelessly and selflessly to help our New York dairy producers improve their businesses and make better decisions.”

Some of the programs Karszes coordinates and supports as a Senior Extension Associate with PRO-DAIRY are the Dairy Farm Business Summary & Analysis Program, Peer-to-Peer discussion groups, Dairy Profit Monitor, Activity Cost Analysis Projects, and management training programs.

“Thank you,” Karszes said. “What an honor and surprise. I appreciate all the effort all of you have put into training me. My professional development is always coming from the farms, and you asking questions and challenging me. The program and the impact are the result of many staff working behind the scenes, who also help lead the programs.”

Karszes facilitates multiple dairy profit discussion groups that center on budgeting, decision making, activity analysis, and goal setting to improve business performance. These groups create space for farmers to share and discuss performance data with peers. Facilitated peer-to-peer discussions help farmers understand links between management decisions and financial outcomes, and to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement within their businesses.

“I look forward to those meetings more than any other. The time we spend there with our peers, in the environment Jason has cultivated, are probably the most valuable meetings I attend each year,” Gilbert said. “Jason has done this for years, selflessly. He is a huge asset who doesn’t get enough credit. He certainly has a small and dedicated staff supporting him, but year over year Jason is the one constant. I can't think of anyone more deserving of the 2024 Friend of NEDPA award than Jason Karszes.”
