Whole Genome Sequencing for Laboratorians and Epidemiologists Live Learning Series

The Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) for Laboratorians and Epidemiologists Live Learning Series (LLS) is targeted towards laboratorian-epidemiologist teams from the New York and Colorado Integrated Food Safety Center of Excellence (CoE) regions and will focus on WGS workflow, basics on BioNumerics resources and use of case studies to illustrate pathogen thresholds, cluster identification and resource prioritization. This series was developed to complement the 2017-18 CoE-developed Applied WGS LLS, which introduced epidemiologists to the interpretation of WGS data. Participants who attended the Applied WGS LLS are encouraged to enroll for this more advanced series.

Each one-hour session will consist of a presentation by a subject-matter expert followed by a participant-led discussion or exercise. Following each session, an optional 30-minute “café chat” will be held for further discussion and Q&A.

Course Goal

Provide laboratorians and epidemiologists with fundamental skills for interpreting and communicating WGS results.

Course Outcomes

After completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Effectively communicate cluster information to their laboratorian or epidemiologist counterpart(s)
  • Understand why different analytic tools produce different results
  • Determine pathogen-specific SNP/allele cutoffs
  • Begin using the NCBI Pathogen Detection Browser for cluster identification
