Management and marketing skills for farm owners and managers
PRO-LIVESTOCK hones the marketing and management skills of our livestock farm owners and managers, enhances the technical skills of farm employees, and provides technical expertise to our state's livestock farms in many important areas.
The beef industry continues to be an important part of the rural economy, especially in areas less suited to dairy cattle production. Demand for resources to support current or new producers is growing, particularly expertise in beef crossed with dairy cattle, and in grazing practices.
Sheep and goats are well suited to take advantage of the forages that grow in New York state. The abundant grass for hay and pastures, along with existing farm buildings that can be adapted for use by sheep and goats makes them an appealing farm operation for many families.
The sheep industry in New York is experiencing a resurgence, largely tied to increased consumer demand for dairy products from sheep milk, as well as the rapidly growing practice of grazing sheep under large solar installations.

We’re working to strengthen the supply chain for locally grown animal fiber—from fleece to finished product. Whether you’re actively marketing your fiber or haven’t yet found the right outlet, we want to hear from you.
This short survey is for anyone raising sheep, alpacas, goats, or other fiber animals in New York State. Your input will help shape future efforts to make fiber farming more sustainable, visible, and profitable.
We will share aggregated results with the broader community to help build a clearer picture of fiber production in New York. Individual responses will remain confidential.
