PRO-LIVESTOCK supports NY livestock farms, strengthens the food system and enhances environmental sustainability practices.
Program Areas
The beef industry continues to be an important part of the rural economy, especially in areas less suited to dairy cattle production. Demand for resources to support current or new producers is growing, particularly expertise in beef crossed with dairy cattle, and in grazing practices.
Sheep and goats are well suited to take advantage of the forages that grow in New York state. The abundant grass for hay and pastures, along with existing farm buildings that can be adapted for use by sheep and goats makes them an appealing farm operation for many families.
The sheep industry in New York is experiencing a resurgence, largely tied to increased consumer demand for dairy products from sheep milk, as well as the rapidly growing practice of grazing sheep under large solar installations.
"We view the non-dairy livestock sector as a growth area in New York. Providing extension and applied research programs in support of these producers is critical for New York agriculture," said Thomas Overton, department chair, professor of dairy nutrition and management, Cornell Department of Animal Science.
