Cornell CALS PRO-DAIRY has hired Cesar Matamoros, Ph.D., for a newly-created precision dairy nutrition specialist position. Matamoros will focus statewide on increasing production and nutrient use efficiency of dairy farms in New York to meet the growing demand of milk and milk components within the region. He will work with nutritionists on the application of CNCPS and other nutritional tools and develop a robust extension program in applied dairy nutrition management to increase the productive efficiency of the New York dairy industry.
"I am very excited to have Cesar join the PRO-DAIRY team," said PRO-DAIRY associate director Karl Czymmek. "He brings critical capacity and expertise to dairy nutrition extension as New York dairy farmers gear up for the increasing demand for milk."
Prior to joining PRO-DAIRY, Matamoros served as the Northeast U.S. dairy technical lead for a national dairy nutrition company. Having worked with dairy farms of different scales, dairy nutritionists, technical specialists and feed mills across the region, Matamoros has extensive experience in practical and applied dairy nutrition, management and forage production. Growing up in Honduras, he has a broad understanding of different dairy nutrition production systems and focuses on training all shareholders across farms, regardless of their background, on key aspects of dairy production.
Matamoros holds a B.S. in agronomy from Zamorano University and completed his Ph.D. with a focus on ruminant nutritional physiology and lactation biology from The Pennsylvania State University. He also completed USDA-funded predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships focusing on characterizing novel strategies to increase milk fat production.
