This update was released in the October 2024 issue of PRO-DAIRY's e-Leader newsletter, distributed to an email list of nearly 7,000 dairy producers, agriservice, and legislators.

Given the unpredictable nature of the dairy industry, it is important to monitor the performance of your dairy business on a regular basis. The Cornell Dairy Profit Monitor (DPM) is one tool that farms throughout New York and the United States use to monitor their dairy's performance. The PRO-DAIRY Business Management team has released a fact sheet with graphs that show trends in the monthly average and range for dairy performance metrics measured in DPM for the period of July 2023 through June 2024, with 66 participating farms. The graphs also show the average for the prior year as a comparison and can be used to benchmark  farm performance to this group over the last year.

Compared to the year prior:

  • Pounds of milk per cow per day followed a similar trend

  • Component production trended on average 0.2 pounds higher, driven by increased percent butterfat and protein in milk

  • Feed conversion increased

  • Total lactating feed cost per hundredweight was lower in almost all months

PRO-DAIRY is a nationally recognized extension and applied research leader serving dairy farms for more than 35 years.
