Conferences

In collaboration with colleagues from Cornell’s Center for Research on Programmable Plant Systems, graduate student Sohinee Bera presented at the Programmable Plants for a Sustainable Future conference. The conference was part of the Terra Madre Salone Del Gusto, an international food festival and conference dedicated to promoting “good, clean, and fair food.” During the event, held in Turin, Italy, they highlighted several prototypes of programmable plants being developed by CROPPS. In addition, they led two public engagement activities: a roundtable discussion with Slow Food delegates and a survey of the general public, gathering a wide range of social and ethical perspectives on the concept of programmable plants.

Conference participants Cristian Salazar De Leon, Sohinee Bera, and Anya Gruber posed for a picture after their conference presentation.

Lecturer Jamal Uddin organized and moderated an international virtual seminar featuring Bangladeshi scholars from the USA, leading journalists, renowned scholars, and high-level government officials from Bangladesh. The event, which took place on September 29, 2024, was an initiative of Bangladeshi Communication Scholars in North America.

Publications

Graduate student Ellie Homant published a review of Michael Serazio’s latest book, The Authenticity Industries: Keeping It “Real” in Media, Culture, and Politics. Her review, published in Television and New Media, summarizes the author’s argument about how authenticity is constructed, by whom, and to what ends. In the review, Ellie argues that the book breaks new ground in its cross-industrial focus: by juxtaposing analyses of seemingly disparate industries such as music and politics, Serazio both encourages readers to make cross-industrial connections, and creates a compelling, sophisticated argument about the inescapability of authenticity in contemporary American culture.
