Graduate research assistant Rahul Goel worked on a precision agriculture project with Cornell’s Nutrient Management Spear Program (NMSP) alongside Subha Srinivasagan, Atkinson postdoctoral fellow. Having worked for NMSP for the 2023-24 school year, Goel graduated from Cornell with his master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in May of 2024. Read on to learn more about Goel and his experience with NMSP, and to find out where he’s going next.
Rahul Goel completed his mechanical engineering bachelor’s degree in India. He went on to work various internships, ranging from software engineering at Microsoft to working with satellite imagery at AiDash. As an electrical and computer engineering master’s student, Goel joined the Nutrient Management Spear Program (NMSP) team as a graduate research assistant in October 2023.
Goel has been collaborating with Atkinson postdoctoral fellow Subha Srinivasagan as part of NMSP’s precision agriculture team under the leadership of Dr. Quirine Ketterings, professor of nutrient management in the department of Animal Science and NMSP lead. Together they have worked to create a web-based tool meant to semi-automate the analysis of single-strip spatial evaluation approach (SSEA) research trials.
Making use of yield monitor technology, NMSP has been helping farmers use the SSEA approach so they can learn more about what would help their crops flourish. SSEA trials occur on a smaller portion of land than typical agricultural research trials and don’t require as many resources, which means fewer barriers to participation for the farmers.
“We worked with farmers and crop advisors to develop an approach to on-farm research that is easier to implement for the farmers,” said Ketterings. “It is really great to see this result in the online tool that Rahul and Subha developed.”
