John Fitzpatrick, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and head of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, was recently recognized by the American Ornithologists’ Union for his leadership and conservation efforts.

The Ralph W. Schreiber Conservation Award from the American Ornithologists’ Union (AOU) recognizes extraordinary scientific contributions to the conservation, restoration, or preservation of birds and/or their habitats by an individual or small team.

The AOU applauded Fitzpatrick’s leadership, noting that “the Cornell Lab has grown into a force for conservation, with education and outreach programs that bring bird science to the public.” The organization specifically focused on Fitzpatrick’s research on the ecology of Florida Scrub-Jays. His work has helped slow the decline of this threatened species, according to the AOU.
