Computer Backup – Code42

New Backup Solution

Cornell’s current solution for data backup and recovery, EZ-Backup, is being phased out and a real-time, secure, cloud-based solution called Code42 is taking its place.  Code42 is offered as part of Cornell’s Certified Desktop as a direct replacement for EZ-Backup.  Code42 is available to all users of CALS-OIT managed computers at no cost as this solution is being fully funded by CALS.

CALS Office of Information Technology has been configuring newly setup computers with Code42 and we will now begin offering it to all CALS managed computers.  If you’re already using Code42, there is nothing else you need to do.

How to Get Code42

Step 1: Categorize your Computer

For you to begin using this backup solution, you must first help us categorize your computer(s), if you haven’t done so already.

Step 2:  Install via Self-Service

Starting February 2020, and running through March 2020, CALS OIT will begin a phased rollout of Code42.  You can expect to receive an email from us when your department will begin receiving the Code42 offering.  If you’ve completed step 1 above, you should see Code42 within the Self-Service portal on your computer.  For step-by-step instructions for PC and Mac, see below.

What Happens to my EZ-Backup Account?

Our goal is to cancel your EZ-Backup account no later than 60 days after Code42 has run a successful backup.  Before canceling your EZ-Backup account, CALS OIT will monitor your Code42 backup status to ensure a full backup has occurred.  After we confirm this, we’ll work with your department to request the cancellation of your EZ-Backup service.
