Nathalie Trottier

Nathalie Trottier’s research has primarily focused on amino acid metabolism and nutrition in livestock species, particularly pigs and horses. Her investigations have addressed the following:

• Examining amino acid metabolism and mammary gland function to improve milk production efficiency in sows (pioneering research in lactation biology)
• Optimizing dietary amino acid profiles
• Enhancing nitrogen utilization efficiency
• Mitigating environmental impacts through dietary management strategies

Her recent research interests include:

• The application of cannabinoids in cats, dogs and horses (research conducted in collaboration with the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University)
• The nutritional feasibility of hemp seed meal in diets for horses and pigs

Prof. Trottier also directs the Master of Professional Studies (MPS) Program in Animal Science, mentors students enrolled in the program and teaches a professional development seminar.

In addition, she has contributed significantly to professional committees, notably serving on the National Animal Nutrition Program (NANP) modeling committee from 2012 to 2022 and participating in the National Research Council committee for determining nutrient requirements for swine.

From 1995 to 2020, she served as a faculty member in the Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University (MSU), where she is currently Professor Emerita.
