Jeff Liebert, PhD student in the SIPS Section of Soil and Crop Sciences, called on Canadians to boldly reimagine agriculture and food systems in a manner that is socially just, ecologically sustainable, and reflects the diversity of Canadian cultures and landscapes.

Liebert spoke at the 2017 Walrus Talks National Tour on April 22 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. His talk focused on the shortcomings of the current agricultural model in Canada as he encouraged the country to adopt a bold vision for agriculture. The Walrus Talks are a Signature Initiative celebrating the 150th anniversary of Canada’s founding, and are meant to spur conversation about Canadian society.

The non-profit Walrus Foundation, in partnership with the Order of Canada and Canada 150, is presenting the national tour to focus on the future of Canada. The tour features fifty members of the Order of Canada and fifty youth leaders, and runs March 1- June 1. Liebert, a native of Vancouver, British Columbia was nominated by Fulbright Canada.

Liebert works on alternative cropping systems in the research program of Matt Ryan, assistant professor of sustaintable cropping systems
