Students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) will now have the opportunity to apply their Cornell financial aid packages towards a summer semester at the Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML), Cornell’s marine science field station located on Appledore Island, Maine.
The Shoals Semester allows CALS students to accelerate their undergraduate program at Cornell by accumulating a full semester’s worth of credits over the summer at SML. Students who complete a Shoals Semester could opt to graduate early, or replace a regular fall or spring semester with an internship or job opportunity available during the academic year.
SML offers courses in evolution, marine ecology, sustainable fisheries, scientific SCUBA diving, and more, as well as the opportunity to participate in a research apprenticeship for credit. Many courses fulfill major requirements and the variety of summer courses allows students to customize a program that aligns with their individual interests. Taken sequentially one course at a time over the summer, students immerse themselves in experiential learning across the island campus.
“We are thrilled to have CALS support to enable more undergraduates the opportunity to experience a Shoals Semester,” said Jennifer Seavey, Kingsbury Director of the Shoals Marine Laboratory. “This additional support means that Cornell’s tradition of ‘any student, any study’ is now realized at SML. Intensive, hands-on summer study at SML prepares students in many different majors for marine careers, graduate study, and field positions across the globe.”
There will be two information sessions held for interested students: April 11 from 5-7 p.m. and April 12 from 6-8 p.m., both in Stimson Hall Room 206 on the Cornell campus.
