Traversing the NOIScape: An Integrated Soundscape Assessment System for Urban Landscapes
Sound plays a critical role in supporting both physical and psychological well-being, shaping how people perceive and experience space.
In dense urban environments, however, rapid modernization and infrastructural expansion since the early twentieth century have intensified concerns over noise pollution. What was once regarded as a minor urban nuisance has evolved into a significant environmental issue that is increasingly monitored and regulated. Beyond mitigating unwanted noise, landscape interventions also possess the capacity to cultivate distinctive soundscapes that reflect cultural identity. By combining quantitative technical analysis with qualitative auditory observation, this thesis proposes a comprehensive framework for soundscape assessment in urban landscapes, emphasizing the role of landscape architecture in promoting auditory well-being and informing future design interventions.
