This session will focus on Cyclospora and why the food industry should be familiar with this parasite and the food safety risk it represents. The session will start with presentations from two of our top experts in the field:
- Dr. Kalmia Kniel (Department of Animal and Food Sciences, University of Delaware) will present on the basic characteristics of this parasite and why we are still seeing outbreaks every summer. She will provide updates and gaps in knowledge related to possible reservoirs and routs of transmission, as well as provide some solutions for the food industry, including any alternative methods that are being evaluated or are already available on the market.
- Amy Robbins, MPH (New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Communicable Disease Control) will give us a summary of how surveillance for this parasite is performed in New York, including improvements in surveillance that were implemented in the last years. She will also provide some information on how individual States are participating in a national enhanced surveillance network.
After the presentations, the two presenters will join an expert panel to address questions during a moderated Q&A. Produce Industry Virtual Office Hours are hosted in collaboration with the Produce Safety Alliance and the IFS@CU.
