Rice Cultivation in New York State

This project will examine any potential differences between two rice cultivars grown in an alternative environment to the traditional paddy method.
Roles and responsibilities
The intern will work to examine any potential differences between two rice cultivars grown in an alternative environment to the traditional paddy method. The selected intern will also be working on:
- Field condition monitoring including periodic soil sampling and weed growth or species differences throughout the growing season
- Monitoring of any potential phenotypical differences between the two cultivars (i.e. plant growth and successful transplanting rates)
- General farm safety and farm management decision-making
Qualifications and previous coursework
This opportunity was made available to non-graduating students enrolled in Cornell University's CAS, ILR, AAP, CEE and JCB.
- Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, Internet and visual channels.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work and meet deadlines.
- Must be able to demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team and to relate and work effectively with diverse people.
- Ability to work independently, make decisions, attend to details, handle multiple assignments, set priorities and work under pressure.
- Ability to manage long-term goals within a context of day-to-day deadlines.
- Knowledge and experience of working in a field setting.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Computer Skills: High level skills in spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel), word processing (Microsoft Word), and internet software.
