Engaging Madison County Communities with Local History

History is all around us and deepens community ties and our sense of place. The rolling hills of Madison County in central New York has a rich historical legacy in beautiful small towns, farms, and natural settings that has made it a unique off-the-beaten path agritourism destination.

The County Historian has developed a popular monthly series called "History Where you Eat" which brings local speakers to historic venues to introduce this history to a broad audience while supporting the local economy. The intern will work and live at a historical lakeside estate in the county now housing the Cornell Biological Field Station on Oneida Lake. In the early 1900s it was the summer home and testing ground for prolific entrepreneur and inventor Alexander Brown.

The intern will be mentored by field station and Madison County CCE staff and the County Historian to research the residential and academic history of the site actively reviewing a large cache of on-site and locally archived historical records. They will assist the County Historian in planning activities including the “History Where you Eat” series culminating in hosting an event at the field station during the summer.
