Alejandro Calixto

Director, Cornell Integrated Pest Management

About
Selected Publications

As Director of Cornell University’s Integrated Pest Management Program (Cornell IPM), Alejandro Calixto leads a team of scientists and extension specialists in entomology, plant pathology, weed science and pesticide safety. Together, they pioneer ecologically resilient pest management practices that promote safer farms, homes, schools and communities.

Prior to joining Cornell IPM, Calixto spent more than two decades developing strategies to reduce the impact of pests across both public and private sectors. As a research scientist at Texas A&M University, he focused on invasive species and the management of urban and agricultural pests, while developing pest prediction systems. At Dow AgroSciences/Corteva Agriscience, he contributed to the creation of crop protection tools for managing insect pests and plant pathogens, supporting both IPM and resistance management programs.

Calixto has contributed to integrated pest management projects around the world, including in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and New Zealand. He is currently leading efforts to make IPM more accessible to marginalized and non-English speaking communities.

Research Focus

Calixto’s research centers on the ecology and management of exotic species. He uses fundamental ecological principles to develop management strategies targeting exotic insects in both urban and agricultural environments. His previous work involved manipulative field and laboratory experiments, including molecular techniques, to investigate the mechanisms and outcomes of species interactions under various management practices, including formulated insecticides.

Outreach and Extension Focus

Calixto’s extension and outreach efforts focus on developing decision support systems for selected pests in production agriculture. These systems leverage web-based information technology to process large datasets—through simulations and statistical models —to deliver actionable knowledge to producers.

These tools help producers determine if, and when, to take management actions, offering a decision window that recommends treatment only when necessary. This approach reduces environmental and human health risks, as well as the costs associated with pest management.

Teaching Focus

Calixto does not currently have formal teaching commitments; however, he participates annually in a field ecology course offered to undergraduate students by Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and Fundación Macondo in Colombia, serving as the instructor for the applied entomology module.
