CALS Undergraduate Learning Outcomes

  • Find, access, critically evaluate and interpret information, theories and assumptions in one or more major knowledge domains to understand issues, inform decision-making, and reach defensible conclusions.   

  • Demonstrate knowledge of fundamental principles in the life sciences and describe elements of the agriculture and food system.

  • Apply data literacy skills to the preparation, interpretation and development of conclusions with quantitative and qualitative data. 

  • Use technologies that assist with data collection, organization, analysis, design, communication and presentation. 

  • Communicate effectively through written, oral and visual expression for a variety of purposes and audiences. 

  • Demonstrate knowledge and awareness of the cultural practices, values, and beliefs of diverse groups of individuals; demonstrate understanding of systemic oppression at multiple levels; understand one’s own cultural perspective and the potential for associated biases. 

  • Demonstrate the capability to work both independently and in cooperation with others. 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of ethical principles that guide self, interpersonal, social, societal and global interactions, and ethics in research, practice, and communication of knowledge in the student’s major discipline. 

  • Develop and apply problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity and reasoning skills to complex problems to develop and test hypotheses, and propose, critique, and evaluate solutions.    

  • Apply concepts of sustainability to the analysis of one or more major challenges facing humans and the Earth’s resources.
