Joellen provides support for planning, conducting, and evaluating a comprehensive IPM educational outreach program within communities, with an emphasis on IPM for schools and turfgrass settings. She is a regular contributor to Cornell IPM's blogs, ThinkIPM and The ABC's of School and Childcare Pest Management. Joellen has also collaborated on research projects related to turfgrass pests, ticks and pollinators.

Recent Research

Research has shown that personal protection can be the most effective way to prevent tick-borne diseases, but they are not broadly applied by the public. Even those that do practice tick protection are not consistent, leaving themselves vulnerable to tick bites. If increasing these personal protection strategies is key to reducing risk, understanding the public’s knowledge, attitudes, and practices surrounding ticks, tick-borne diseases and personal protection is crucial to the design of messaging campaigns to increase protective behaviors. I am also involved in research on the longhorned tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis, which poses a threat to New York’s livestock.
