Cornell CALS PRO‑DAIRY is now accepting applications for the 2026–2027 Junior DAIRY LEADER (JDL) program, a yearlong leadership and career‑development experience designed for motivated 16‑ to 19‑year‑old students in 11th or 12th grade who are interested in exploring opportunities in the dairy industry. Now entering its 27th year, JDL continues to serve as one of New York’s most impactful youth agricultural programs, helping prepare the next generation of dairy professionals, managers, and industry leaders.

The program was created in response to a long‑recognized challenge within the dairy sector: the need to attract and develop young talent. Dairy producers consistently identify workforce development as a top priority and a significant barrier to long‑term industry sustainability. JDL addresses this need by offering teens a structured, supportive environment where they can build enthusiasm for agriculture, strengthen leadership skills, and gain exposure to the wide range of careers that support dairy production and food systems.

At its core, the Junior DAIRY LEADER program is built around personal growth, professional development, and hands‑on learning. Participants engage in a series of workshops, farm visits, and industry interactions that broaden their understanding of dairy production and the agricultural landscape. The program emphasizes communication, teamwork, problem‑solving, and career exploration—skills essential for future farm owners, managers, partners and agricultural service providers.

Beginning in late September 2026 and concluding in August 2027, the yearlong experience offers students a realistic and inspiring look at dairy as a progressive, technology‑driven, and economically significant industry. Throughout the program, participants will:

  • Represent New York at the National 4‑H Dairy Conference: Connecting with peers from across the country.
  • Engage with dairy producers and industry professionals: Gaining insight into real‑world challenges and opportunities.
  • Participate in on‑farm production management experiences: Learning directly from working dairy operations.
  • Tour dairy farms and agricultural facilities in the Northeast and Wisconsin: Observing diverse management systems and technologies.
  • Build leadership and teamwork skills: Preparing for future roles in agriculture.
  • Develop technical knowledge in dairy production: Strengthening their foundation for college or career pathways.

JDL welcomes both farm and non‑farm youth, recognizing that the future of the dairy industry depends on attracting a wide range of talented individuals with varied backgrounds and interests. The program provides a unique “discussion group” environment where teens can build a peer network, share experiences, and explore educational and career options in agriculture.

Applications for the 2026–2027 class are due June 30, 2026. Students, educators, and community members who know a young person with an interest in dairy or agriculture are encouraged to share this opportunity.
