The online learning platform eCornell will host a webinar, “Practicing Digital Citizenship: A Social Media Test Drive,” Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.

Presenting the hourlong webinar will be Janis Whitlock, research scientist in the College of Human Ecology, and Natalie Bazarova, associate professor of communication in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Visit the eCornell website to register.

Social media has radically transformed the way people communicate, and how we view the world and ourselves. For kids, tweens and teenagers, the changes brought by social media can be overwhelming and difficult to navigate. In this webinar, Whitlock and Bazarova will explore the topic of social media and discuss Social Media TestDrive, an interactive educational platform created by researchers in the Cornell University Social Media Lab, in collaboration with Common Sense Education.

Social Media TestDrive provides a simulated experience of realistic digital scenarios, enabling young people to learn and practice digital citizenship skills.

In this webinar, discover:

  • The skills young users need to master in order to make social media a positive experience, such as managing privacy settings, smart self-presentation, and standing up to cyberbullying;
  • The importance of helping kids identify “fake news” and become informed consumers of online content; and
  • how TestDrive can help educators and parents prepare children for entering the online world.
