CALS Student-Nominated Awards

These awards celebrate and recognize those in our community who inspire and engage students through innovative and transformative advising, mentoring, and teaching practices.

Each Fall the CALS Office of Student Service (cals-studentservices [at] cep.cornell.edu (cals-studentservices[at]cep[dot]cornell[dot]edu)) will put out a call for nominations, with awardees announced and celebrated at our spring awards event.

CALS Donald C. Burgett Distinguished Advisor Award

After 28 years of service, Donald C. Burgett retired as CALS’ Director of Student Services in September 1995, after an outstanding career working with and counseling students. He also coordinated the CALS faculty advising program, designed efficient and successful academic programs made academic programs work, skillfully handled the Academic Petitions Committee, and excelled in all other aspects of his position. The award is named in Don's honor.

This award is considered prestigious by the faculty, because it is awarded by students.

Eligibility

Nominees must be academic advisors of CALS undergraduates.

CALS Excellence in Mentoring Award

The Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Students in Independent Research award is a student-nominated award that recognizes a CALS faculty or academic staff member (research and extension associates and lecturers) who has provided outstanding guidance and mentorship to one or more students engaged in independent research. During the selection process, quality of mentorship will be weighted more than the number of students mentored.

Eligibility

Nominees for this award must be CALS faculty or academic staff members (research and extension associates and lecturers).

CALS Professor of Merit Award

The Professor of Merit award is a student-nominated award that recognizes excellence in undergraduate teaching. Since 1947, the Senior Class of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has had the privilege of selecting a Professor of Merit. This award is considered prestigious by faculty because it is awarded by students.

Eligibility

Professors and lecturers in CALS are eligible for this award.
