Machine learning vision has been applied in different disciplines to automate sampling activities and agricultural production. This technology can be applied to detect, identify, or count pests, increasing precision agriculture use in Entomology. We developed frameworks with models and prototype web applications capable of detecting and counting pests across different systems. These tools can be integrated into applications and unmanned vehicles for site-specific management, potentially transforming traditional pest monitoring and decision-making.

Speaker

Ivan Grijalva is an Assistant Professor of Precision Agriculture in the Department of Entomology at Louisiana State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Entomology from Kansas State University, with a focus on Precision Pest Management and Digital Agriculture. He also holds a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing certification. His research interests include Machine Learning, GIS, and Remote Sensing, with a particular emphasis on applying machine learning models for detecting insects, weeds, and diseases for use in digital agricultural tools and robotics that enhance precision pest management. Ivan is also interested in using GIS-based remote sensing for pest detection and conservation to facilitate management at both local and landscape levels. He has published multiple research articles in various journals, particularly highlighting the use of machine learning for automating object detection, contributing significantly to the advancement of automation across diverse disciplines.
