Parent and Child Learning Together At Home
- Date: June 3 - August 2, 2025
- Location: NYC
- Faculty sponsor: Marianella Casasola, Psychology
- Field-based mentors/supervisors: Monica Gopaul, CUCE-NYC Program Liaison, Brooklyn/Queens
- Stipend: $6,000

The project explores how an existing curriculum designed for parents of young children, The Growing and Learning Together Through Play, can be extended to reach more families and to incorporate a broader range of home activities, from play to meals to bath time. The project also aims to explore how best to partner with parents of young children to consider how to bolster children's engagement and learning in every day home activities. The focus of the project is on families with young children of 2-5 years.
Roles and responsibilities
The student intern will be responsible for assisting in multiple project tasks and will work with a multidisciplinary team of faculty researchers, educators, and child
development professionals. The student intern's role and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Aid in developing new program strategies for implementation to reach a wider audience of families and additional community partners, particularly those in NYC but also with the goal of including community agencies in rural counties as well.
- Support the faculty member and the parent educator at CUCE-NYC in developing home activities that parents can use at home.
- Attend team Zoom meetings and schedule weekly check ins with the field supervisor and faculty mentor.
Qualifications and previous coursework
This opportunity is available to students in Cornell University's College of Human Ecology.
Undergraduate student interns should have completed coursework on children's learning and development such as courses in human development, psychology, childhood development, public health, and policy. Previous course work in Human Development: Infancy & Childhood is preferred. The ideal intern will demonstrate enthusiasm for community outreach, developing brief activities for parents to use at home with their child, and can flexibly adjust to project demands.
Learning outcomes
The student intern will have the opportunity to engage in the process of developing relationships with community partners and in designing brief educational activities for parents of young children. The student will also have the opportunity to learn about the various projects and community programs currently taking place in CUCE-NYC.
