This internship offers a multi-disciplinary experience related to the circular nutrient system on dairy farms. The experience will involve on-farm research and data collection evaluating a new product with applications as a forage preservative and cattle bedding treatment. The student will help develop extension materials related to the research projects and participate in outreach activities with the CCE regional team and PRO-DAIRY. The intern will also learn about additional forage and dairy management research projects by accompanying project mentors to other project sites throughout the season. With close ties to campus, the student will also be engaged in the Cornell Animal Science Internship program which offers additional professional development and experiential learning opportunities with other interns, including the end of summer poster session.
Roles and responsibilities
The selected intern will need to be able to work in diverse field and farm settings to assist with on-farm data collection. This will include visiting farms during forage harvest and working in barns to collect samples of bedding from animal stalls. Microsoft Office knowledge (specifically Word and Excel) will be utilized to organize data and develop reports and educational materials. Schedule will generally follow regular business hours but make require some early start times or evening hours to attend extension events. Effectively communicate with project mentors and external stakeholders to manage time, achieve project goals and communicate outcomes. A successful intern will be self-motivated and able to work in team environments.
