Agricultural Robotics Education with AgXRP
- Date: Summer 2025
- Location: CCE Saratoga
- Student Intern: Surabhi Bacchav
- Faculty sponsor: Jonathan Jaramillo
- Field-based mentors/supervisors: William Schwerd and Greg Stevens
- Stipend: $6,000
This summer internship offers an exceptional experience in agricultural robotics education through the innovative new gardening robot, AgXRP. The Agricultural Experiential Robotics Platform (AgXRP) is a versatile, open-source educational tool being designed by students in Cornell Cup Robotics to introduce students to precision agriculture, automation, and engineering principles. It integrates robotics technology with sustainable agriculture practices and digital agriculture concepts, delivering practical, hands-on learning opportunities.
Roles and responsibilities
During this internship, the student intern will:
- Work closely with Saratoga County's Cornell Cooperative Extension office, collaborating directly with their county 4-H horticultural education and FIRST Robotics programs.
- Assist in assembling, building, and customizing the AgXRP platform alongside students participating in the FIRST Robotics program.
- Collaborate with Saratoga County's horticultural expert to develop comprehensive agricultural robotics lesson plans and curricular resources, focusing on the applications of robotics in sustainable farming.
- Collecting and analyzing feedback from the program participants and subsequently integrating this feedback into design improvements for the AgXRP, which will then be included in final kits distributed to community partners.
Learning outcomes
This internship provides a valuable opportunity for an intern to engage directly with cutting-edge agricultural robotics education, cultivating practical engineering skills, curriculum development expertise, and real-world problem-solving abilities in partnership with community educators and experts.
