Perspectives in Global Development: Fall 2022 Seminar Series

Agricultural sustainability and climate change are inextricably intertwined.  Agriculture is highly vulnerable to adverse effects from climate change including higher incidence of extreme weather events, invasive weeds and pests, reduction in freshwater availability, and shifting agro-ecological boundaries.  To meet growing food demand from population growth and shifting diets, significant investments will be required to implement climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.  In turn, agriculture as currently practiced, is a key contributing factor to the climate generating an estimated 19-29% of total global greenhouse gas emissions.  Through a panel four Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows from Kyrgyzstan, Brazil, Nigeria and Laos, this seminar explores the nexus between climate change and food security in the Global South.  Panelists will share examples from their countries, debate policy priorities and reflect on the outcomes of the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27).
