Discover CALS

See how our current work and research is bringing new thinking and new solutions to some of today's biggest challenges.

We are in this together

Dear CALS undergraduate students,

During this time of change and uncertainty, I am writing to check in and remind you to please stay in touch with us and with each other as we navigate this challenging period apart – but together.

As you have transitioned to your current residence, the upheaval and disruption have been unprecedented. We are all experiencing many emotions while responding to evolving conditions. Please be kind to yourselves and to others as you take time to adjust. Your emotional and mental well-being are just as important as your physical health.

It feels unsettling to stay at home when you're feeling well (or, in the absence of a blizzard, here in Ithaca!). Remember that you are not alone. Cornell and CALS staff and faculty remain available to connect with you. If you are on or near campus, take-out meals are available from Cornell Dining. Cornell Health remains open with temporarily reduced hours and limitations to in-person appointments. And members of our cals-studentservices [at] cornell.edu (CALS Student Services) team are available to help.

As we navigate such uncharted territory, we are in this together. Among our shared values at Cornell is a sense of civic responsibility that inspires us to consider the needs of the broader community. This spirit has been clear in your efforts to help classmates with moving, transportation, storage and many other needs. And it helps us understand the importance of health guidelines that – while disruptive – are intended to keep you and others safe.

It's unavoidable to think about the real and potential loss of shared experiences that celebrate our time at Cornell. I share feelings of disappointment, especially as I complete my final year as dean of the college. But as a community that spans the globe, it's certain that we will find ways to reunite and celebrate. For now, take good care and be well.

Sincerely,
Kathryn J. Boor, Ph.D.
