International Travel, Summer 2020

March 9, 2020
Dear CALS Faculty, staff, undergraduate students and graduate field assistants,

Many of you have questions about international student travel this summer.  The most recent University travel policy prohibits students from travel to any international destination for Cornell-related research or scholarship until further notice.  This travel restriction would apply to student internship programs (e.g. CALS Global Fellows) or other activities organized or sponsored by the university. At this time, we do not know when the university will lift this travel prohibition. You may wish to give some thought to contingency plans should the international travel ban extend into the summer.

Faculty and staff are required to register for any Cornell-related international travel prior to departure.  This policy will be in place until further notice. If you do not register, the university may not reimburse you for travel expenses.  And any faculty or staff planning to travel on Cornell-related scholarship, research or business to CDC Level 3 areas (currently mainland China, South Korea, Iran, Italy) and Japan must receive approval from ITART prior to travel.

Given concerns about coronavirus (COVID-19), the University is urging anyone who is planning to travel internationally for personal reasons to refrain from doing so. If you decide to do so, the university asks that you register personal travel to international destinations.  Although this practice is not the norm, the University wishes to be able to update travelers in a timely manner should health conditions change in the country they are visiting.

I want to underscore that state and local health officials continue to stress that the risk to the Cornell community—both in New York City and in Ithaca—remains low. And please continue to refer to Cornell’s coronavirus website as a resource not only for the most up-to-date information, but also for important links and general information about wellness and preventative measures.

We will provide additional updates as more information becomes available.

Sincerely,

KJB
