I will be studying Ambystoma road mortality, specifically how the initial dispersal of juvenile Ambystoma salamanders from their natal pools is impacted by roadways. My study will investigate whether roadways constitute a major source of mortality for dispersing juvenile Ambystoma salamanders, investigate the impact of adult and juvenile road mortality on population viability, and investigate the efficacy of volunteer mortality surveys.
Led by two Cornell graduate students, more than 300 volunteers are heading out into the rain on warm spring nights to help migrating salamanders and frogs.
