Katie Callero is the dairy management specialist with the Southwest New York Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Program (SWNYDLFC). In her role, she collaborates with on-campus faculty and Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) agricultural educators in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, and Steuben counties to deliver timely, research- based programming, consultations, and practical resources to dairy farms of all sizes and management styles across the region, with a focus on production management, cow health and behavior, and calf care. Her responsibilities include:
- Developing and delivering dairy-focused educational programming and hands-on training for farm employees and managers
- Conducting and supporting on-farm research related to dairy cattle health, welfare, and management
- Providing on-farm and remote consultation to New York dairy producers on production, health, and management practices
- Organizing and leading producer outreach events, demonstrations, and workshops to connect farmers with research-based resources
After growing up in Southern California, Katie moved to New York to attend Cornell University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in animal science. Following graduation, she worked in a dairy cattle research laboratory at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine, where she focused on transition cow health. She then pursued her master’s degree in animal science at Cornell, where her research focused on dairy cattle welfare and behavior, particularly cow-calf separation practices. She is passionate about providing educational outreach to farmers and fostering connection and community across the agricultural sector.
