Julia Goolsby is a Ph.D. student in the Graduate Field of Communication at Cornell University. She holds an M.A. in Environmental Communication and a B.S. in Earth Systems from Stanford University. Outside of work, Julia enjoys learning about local botany, drawing, making pottery, and trying out new ingredients or recipes.
Julia studies how communication researchers share their research with practitioners who might use that research to inform their work. Specifically, she is interested in how research-based recommendations and “best practices” for environment, science, health, and risk communication are produced, and how practitioners interpret and use those recommendations when communicating with the public.
Prior to Cornell, she spent four years conducting research related to environmental decision making and risk perceptions within natural resource management agencies. She worked with the University of Colorado Boulder, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Forest Service, and National Park Service. She also served as the communication specialist for an interdisciplinary research group that partners with local fire organizations to gather and use local survey data to educate residents about wildfire risk. In all her work, she aims to produce actionable research that helps address pressing environmental challenges.
