Scott Steinschneider

Dr. Steinschneider’s research explores the intersection between anthropogenic, hydrologic, and climatic systems with an emphasis on water resources planning and management. The broad goal of his research program is to provide decision-centric information for the sustainable design and management of integrated water resource systems. Dr. Steinschneider advances his program through three inter-related themes: 1) Assess the variability, predictability, and change of hydroclimate processes that impact the performance of water infrastructure; 2) develop stochastic methods to quantify the risk these hydroclimate processes pose to water services; 3) identify robust adaptation strategies that can mitigate this risk. He pursues this agenda across scales, with primary focal points on hydroclimate forecasts for short-term management and long-term projections for planning under climate change. This research demands an interdisciplinary approach that draws upon the physical sciences, data analytics, and systems simulation and optimization.

Professor Steinschneider teaches students the data analytics necessary to address pressing environmental problems facing society today, including emerging concerns in the fields of hydrology and climate change. He helps students learn how to leverage data analysis to better understand complex environmental systems, and how to use that understanding to communicate scientific insights and engineering solutions to a range of audiences.
