For over 130 years, Cornell AgriTech has developed scientific research and extension efforts to support the residents of New York state, as well as members of the food and agricultural industries. As the effects of the novel coronavirus unfold, Cornell AgriTech remains committed to helping others adapt to the challenges of the changing times.

“Our mission has always been to help New Yorkers, and given current circumstances, we are finding new ways to do that,” said Larry Smart, associate director of Cornell AgriTech. “Because the health of Geneva community members is important, we have made the decision to donate a large amount of personal protective equipment (PPE) that we normally use for research to Finger Lakes Health (FLH).”

The New York State Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have anticipated a surge of COVID-19 cases, which has caused a nationwide shortage of certain medical supplies. Based in Geneva, New York, FLH reached out to local businesses and community members, asking them to donate supplies to help meet the predicted surge.

Cornell AgriTech employees joined forces to donate a total of 200 tyvek suits and overalls, 50 masks and thousands of gloves to FLH on March 27. As both scientists and as long-time residents of Geneva, Larry Smart and Chris Smart, director of the School of Integrative Plant Science, felt it was important to give back to their community.

“Everyone at Cornell AgriTech is so thankful for all healthcare workers, and we only wish we could do more,” said Chris Smart.

Lara Turbide, vice president for community services at FLH, said that having an ample supply of equipment will help their healthcare workers be ready for a potential rise in COVID-19 cases over the next few weeks. She said, “We are deeply grateful for Cornell AgriTech and extraordinary people responding in extraordinary times.”

Despite donations from Cornell AgriTech and local businesses, Turbide said that FLH still needs support. They are specifically looking for donations of N95 masks, ear loop masks, isolation masks and hand sanitizer (preferably 70% alcohol).

Donated supplies can be made to any FLH facilities, including Geneva General Hospital, Soldiers & Sailors Hospital and its other long term health facilities. At Geneva General Hospital, donations can be dropped off directly on the loading dock, located behind the hospital. Please label them: Attention Lara Turbide, Community Services. The loading dock is open Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

For questions related to supply donations, please call 315-787-4053 or email lara.turbide [at] flhealth.org
