The 36th CALS Teaching Experience June 12-13, 2025

Join us for our annual two-day teaching workshop, where we'll explore strategies to foster student engagement and success both inside and outside the classroom.
'Engaging through Experience: Cultivating Learning Connections Within and Beyond the Classroom'

Sponsored by the CALS Office of Curriculum Development and Instructional Support and the CALS Support of Teaching and Learning Committee (CSTL)

 

This is an in-person event and is open to all Cornell instructors.

This workshop offers:

  • Information and resources to support your teaching

  • Practical examples and hands-on opportunities to implement teaching practices

  • Opportunities to extend your teaching and learning network

 

Snacks and lunch will be provided on June 12th only (food is not allowed at the Johnson Museum)

 


 

Schedule of Events

June 12th    Location: 160 Mann Library

9:00-9:45         Welcome and Introductions

9:50-11:10       Session I. Taking Class Out of the Classroom Speakers share examples and strategies for field trips and community engagement projects. Topics covered include logistical planning, partnerships, and maximizing the learning potential of off-campus experiences.

11:15-12:30     Session II.  Bringing Community Into Your Curriculum Explore how to design courses centered around community-based learning. Panelists discuss ways to integrate community engagement into course design, including creating service-learning projects and involving real-world issues in curriculum planning.

12:30-1:15       Lunch

1:15-2:30         Session III.  Connecting Students to Experiences Beyond the Classroom Interactive session where participants explore the "Learning Action Plan" (LAP) as a method to advance student learning in the context of engaged learning opportunities through goal setting and assessment. 

2:45-3:30         Reflection and wrap-up

 

June 13th    Location: Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art

9:00-9:30         Warm-up activity

9:30-12:00       Session IV. One Resource, Many Applications Discover how a single on-campus destination has been creatively utilized across courses and disciplines to enhance teaching and learning. Session guide will share examples and strategies for adapting this shared resource to diverse academic contexts and objectives.

12:00-12:30     Reflection, wrap-up, and evaluations

 


 

In an effort to promote sustainability and reduce our environmental impact, we will not be providing printed materials such as schedules, agendas, or handouts. Instead, we will be providing all necessary information and resources digitally. Paper versions of materials can be requested via the registration form.

Please bring a laptop, tablet, or other internet-accessible device to access the digital resources and participate in activities during the event.

You are also encouraged to bring your own water bottle if you have one.

The CALS Teaching Experience is offered at no cost to participants, thanks to support from the CALS Office of Academic Programs and the CALS Office of Curriculum Development and Instructional Support.
