CALS Diversity and Inclusion Committee
The CALS Committee on Diversity and Inclusion was formed in the 1980s and is an active body committed to creating an environment where all members of CALS and the Cornell community can thrive, regardless of their backgrounds or identities. Diversity encompasses the full spectrum of human experiences, including but not limited to socioeconomic background, first-generation status, rural upbringing, religious affiliation, disability status, cultural perspectives, and various lived experiences, some of which have historically been excluded from higher education. Inclusion means actively engaging all voices and perspectives–our community is strengthened and excellence in education and research is achieved when all members can fully engage, contribute, and reach their potential. This committee comprises individuals at all levels of study and work who are committed to fostering an environment where diverse perspectives are not only welcomed but actively sought out. Through dialogue, research, and action, this committee supports the CALS commitment to ensuring that all individuals have access to the resources, opportunities, and support needed to succeed and flourish at Cornell.
Nomination Process and Term
Members of this committee can be self-nominated or may decide to join when invited by current or former members. Members come from all levels of CALS including faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students and undergraduate students. Faculty and staff participants have terms of 3 years. Postdoctoral scholars and graduate and undergraduate students are not required to hold terms but are encouraged to serve for more than one year, if possible.
