Why This Summit, Why Now?

In an era when scientific expertise is increasingly questioned and must compete with other forms of public authority, it is more important than ever to reflect on and renew our commitments as New York State’s land-grant institution. This summit is a space to listen, learn and plan—together. It marks the beginning of an ongoing conversation about how we can reimagine our public mission in ways that are bold, inclusive and responsive to the needs of the communities we serve.

Purpose

Our purpose for holding this summit has three parts:

  • First, to listen to your insights, stories, and aspirations. What challenges are you experiencing right now as you pursue your work, goals, and values? What questions do you have that CALS might join you in answering?
  • Second, to learn from our listening how we might give new power and meaning to our land-grant mission at this critical moment in world history. This will include the scheduling of additional listening and learning sessions.
  • Third, to document our listening and learning as a tool to develop a framework and shared commitment to lead together; to take up new opportunities to advance our shared goals and values through a bold, revitalized sense of purpose that is grounded in our identity and mission as a land-grant institution.
