Join us in 175 Warren Hall for a lecture by Kasey Toomey, How to Not Design a Garden. This lecture is part of the Department of Landscape Architecture's fall 2026 lecture series, How Can Landscape Architecture Have Actual Agency?

Kasey's lecture will focus on designing through maintenance and care. This is a component of our practice that we call Radical Gardens of Love and Interconnectedness.

Kasey Toomey (RLA) is a Principal at Terremoto in Berkeley. He received his BSLA with Distinction in Research from Cornell University and a MFA concentrating in sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania. Kasey believes in non-human centric design solutions and using hyperlocal plants and materials only.

Kasey previously worked as a landscape architect on large scale public space within Philadelphia with a focus on the integration of art into the public sphere both formally and informally, collaborating with artists Sol Lewitt, Claes Oldenburg, and Janet Echelman. Kasey has co-taught multiple urban design studios at Penn State University focusing on the industrial Callowhill neighborhood in Philadelphia. He returned to academia and received an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania. While at UPenn, Kasey studied under the artist Ken Lum and focused his sculptural work on objects and installations that embody the landscape. Currently at Terremoto, Kasey has been collaborating with the artist David Horvitz on a sculpture that is also a garden that is also a poem. He has shown his sculptural artwork in galleries and museums in Philadelphia, New York City, Brooklyn, and Los Angeles.
