USAID has been dismantled: the agency provided 60B of the 220B in official development assistance (ODA) to less-developed economies in 2023.
This seismic shift in US foreign aid policy likely also signals a global ODA re-organization. While undoubtedly straining resources in the international research and development community, it is also a pivotal moment to re-think the funding and collaboration strategy for more equitable, effective, and resilient North-South partnerships. There are jobs for everyone to do in remaking a development paradigm that is equitable at its root.
In this colloquium, I build this argument with reference to past failures (and the reasons why) and current efforts at putting shared priorities and shared understandings at the foundation of development research partnerships.
