Cultural Intelligence: A Passport to Understanding with Francine Wilson Jasper

Cultural intelligence (CQ) is important to solve difficult problems such as hunger. We can begin to develop our CQ skills with diverse communities in the United States, then globally. CQ prepares students for the future of food and work by learning how to effectively communicate across cultural differences. It gives students a broader view and perspective of global development, and how different people effect the food system worldwide. Your conference in a box contains the book: “Cultural Intelligence: A Passport to Understanding,” which includes research models, case studies and activities. In this session we will discuss “How Ideas Travel and Who Owns It” and do a couple of activities.

Fostering inclusive communication in learning communities: Lessons learned from Ecuador with Kelly Merchán

As educators, academics and activists on the international stage, it is of utmost importance that our communication practices reflect our values of diversity and inclusion. Inspired by experiences with rural communities in Ecuador, this session will focus on best practices for inclusive communication in partnerships and engaged learning. Diving into topics such as learning environments, fieldwork and internal communications, this session will guide educators to consider the role of listening, power dynamics, relationship building and more in global engagement initiatives.
